What We Do
Community Aid international (CAI) approaches its development work with the conviction that the power and will to improve the quality of life lies with the communities in which we work. We believe in directing our effort in helping people to strengthen their capacity and increase their momentum as they work towards realizing their potential in improving their quality of life.
We work in three strategic themes, or programme focus areas, through which we strive to help build capacity of marginalized, underserved and disadvantaged communities. The themes are:
- Poverty Reduction and Wealth Creation, through provision of microfinance services and promotion of entrepreneurship
- Social Justice, within which we promote gender equality, good governance and social accountability in management of public resources and affairs; and
- Health and Wellness, in which we focus on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS
Fighting Poverty with Micro-Finance: In line with our poverty reduction efforts, we have established a partnership with the local communities in Bondo Disrict in western Kenya, where we run financial services associations – known informally as “village banks”. This programme provides finacial servces to over 7000 households, which are able to save and take loans for bunsinesses.
Nurturing Commapssionate Entrepreneurs to Create Wealth for all: In partnership with J9 Foundation in USA, we are nurturing what is emerging as a movement of commpasionate entrepreneurs. We train young men and women using an Expanded Curriculum on Entrepreneusghip. We give them loans with which they start or improve their businesses, and, we work with them to mentour them and incubate their businesses. They strive to be successful entrepreneurs and contribute a portion of their wealth to societal development.
Promoting Good Governance in Kenya through People’s Voices: CAI is the lead agency in a partnership that imeplements The ScorCard Project – a national exercise. This project enables citizens throughout Kenya to express their opinion on the perfromamnce of the government of the day and local authoriries. Through periodic surveys, people throughout the country express their views based on five thematic areas: Service Delivery, Economic Development, Human Rights, Gender Equaity, and Democratization. With The ScoreCard Partnership (including ActionAid, Citizen’s Coallision for Constitutional Change (4Cs), Strategic Public Relations and Research Ltd, and other partners, we promote dialogue, accountability, and issue-based national discourse. We are working in funding partnship with DFID and CIDA.
Fighting for Women Empowerment: CAI is one of the foremost NGOs in fighting for empowerment of women and gender equality. Over the years, CAI has particularly been on women economic empowerment and gendering decision making and leadership. CAI has gender equality promotion activities in the coastal and in western parts of Kenya with funding support from UNIFEM and Ford Foundation.
Working with communities and other agencies to fight the spread, manage the impact of HIV/AIDS and promote reproductive health: We have cut a niche in HIV/AIDS community based and workplace programming. CAI has worked with UN agencies over the years in implementing workplace programme on HIV/AIDS in 10 countries in east and central Africa, and at WFP headquaters in Rome. We are the agency that trains all UN staff in Kenya through partnership with the United Nations Office In Nairobi (UNON). We have also been working with communties in the coastal areas, Nairobi and Lake Victoria areas in western Kenya.
We have been working in partnership with international NGOs such as Engender Health, PATH, FHI, and also the government of Kenya to promote adoption of appropriate reproductive health practices and increase their utilization of available health services. Our activities have covered the coastal areas, western Kenya and Nairobi.
